British model Twiggy, who defined the look of the sixties, planned to give up modelling for acting with the film The Boyfriend. ‘if this film was a success, please God I could give up modelling for ever. I was really sick of it. I didn’t want to be a clothes horse any more.’ Twiggy wore this specially designed Bill Gibb ‘peasant’ dress to the premiere of Ken Russell’s film in 1970.

Ethnic trends were important in the seventies and everyone wore a kaftan from the Beatles to Elizabeth Taylor: here a chiffon kaftan with gold thread by Andre Oliver for Pierre Cardin, 1973.
